WEBVISIONS LAUNCHES ITS FIRST
INTERNET DATA CENTER
Singapore, 18 January 2000 - Webvisions Pte Ltd, Singapore's leading web hosting company, today announced the opening of its first state-of-the-art Data Center. This Internet Data Center, the first in Singapore, will be one of the first independent, dedicated hosting facilities in the Asia-Pacific region. The Data Center will serve to expand Webvisions' presence and visibility in Asia-Pacific, augmenting the company's current range of mission-critical Internet services, including Internet portals, corporate extranets, and web and ASP applications.

"In addition, they need a monitored and secure environment, coupled with high-speed Internet connectivity, to ensure continuous and reliable services. Our new Data Center can provide all of this."

The $1.5 million Data Center is designed with a full suite of high-tech facilities and provides 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year support to over 3,000 international businesses.
To ensure maximum operation with no disruptions, the following protection systems were installed:
- Commercial utility underground conduits
- Redundant UPS systems
- Single 600 Amp incoming power supply switch board
- Dual-feed secondary switchboard and critical load distribution boards
- Backup diesel generator
In addition, the Data Center provides a comprehensive security system whereby all visitors are identified against a client-defined access control list and their entry/exit to the center is logged. All visitors are issued a badge and monitored through an open glass view panel. A dedicated ethernet switched system protects the confidentiality of traffic within the network and prevents servers from tapping the data of other servers on the same network.
The center is equipped with multiple conditioning units, closed-circuit security cameras, a complete FM-200 fire suppression and smoke detection system. Each rack is earth-grounded, with its own individual circuit breaker.
Furthermore, the Data Center is fully powered by Cisco Catalyst 5300 and 8540 switches, and Cisco 7709 routers. All servers are plugged into core switches, instead of secondary switches or hubs, to ensure optimal data transmission. Hacking and snooping of sensitive data is minimised due to dedicated switch connections.
Webvisions has over 100 mbps connectivity to both Singnet and Pacific Internet, as well as its own ATM link directly to Singapore ONE.
At the new Data Center, Webvisions will offer its customers the following services:
Co-Location Services
- Webrack - provides 19" or 24" wide-scalable rack space, which allows customers to install any combination of equipment, operating systems and applications
- Webcage - provides 19" or 24" wide full-height cabinets with secure front-locking door and built-in ventilation fans, which allow customers to store and manage their equipment offsite with maximum security
The co-location services can be configured to suit individual customers' requirements. Webvisions also provides siteSupport Express Service, whereby Webvisions' personnel execute basic system administration functions within the Webvisions' Internet Data Center in customer absences, at no additional cost.
Dedicated Servers
Run on Linux, NT and Unix platforms and designed to provide faster Internet access, greater scalability, secure remote administration, and rock-solid reliability, Webvisions' dedicated servers can be customised to meet individual customer's requirements.
Cobalt RaQ Servers
These servers are an alternative to fussy, over-priced "big iron" servers. Cobalt RaQ Servers are suitable for hosting Internet services like e-mail, DNS, web, etc. A broad selection of Cobalt RaQ servers is offered, using Linux technology. They come with a comprehensive web-based administrator tool and run on proven systems to provide the flexibility and reliability that are vital to hosting providers.
